It is black and white, with white shoulder patches and red underneath the tail. A familiar garden bird, it can be seen around in woodlands and parks. Listen out for its trilling, 'tsee-tsee-tsee' song. It is smaller than the great tit. One of our prettiest garden birds with its striking red crown, golden back, and bright yellow wings. It happily visits birdtables and feeders across the UK. It moves along the riverbank or sits patiently on a low branch over the water, waiting for its next meal to swim by. It is famous for collecting all kinds of objects, particularly anything shiny, to decorate the nest. It is a garden favourite and one of the most familiar birds, adorning Christmas cards every year. It is very territorial, and will defend its post with surprising ferocity. |
